Eating Curd with Salt or Sugar

Curd should never be consumed by adding table salt or table sugar, what? Does that mean we cannot eat delicious Raitas and Sweet curd?

Relax, it’s not that. Curd can be consumed both sweet and savoury but never by adding table sugar or table salt.

Actually both table salt and table sugar are chemically refined and they literally hinder the probiotics and the nutritional information of the curd.

Curd mix with chemically refined table salt or sugar is said to be good for nothing. So what to do? Don’t worry.

All you need to do is replace Table Salt with Rock Salt or Black Salt and replace Table Sugar with Jaggery Powder or Mishri.

This way not only the strength giving properties of the curd remain intact but also enhances the taste and adds variety to your diet.

Taking it further, which is better? Sweet or Savoury.

Generally speaking one can include both sweet and savoury versions of curd in diet. Although if you’re experiencing acidity, bleeding and other body heating issues, hair fall then Sweet is better.

And if you face Gas, Body pains, indigestion then the salty version is better.

Eating Curd at Night.

Curd has become such an intrinsic part of our diet, that many of us eat it at any time of the day, thinking that it will only benefit us. That’s not true.

This is especially common in the southern part of India where every meal, breakfast, lunch or dinner is finished with curd rice.

As per Maharshi Vagbhata, Curd should never be consumed at night. Ayurveda explains when the sun goes down, the body’s temperature is naturally down, and mucus increases.

Curds being mucus causing when consumed at night and can cause blockage within the breathing pipe and sometimes also aggravates the symptoms leading to serious complications.

Cold, Cough, Sinus, Fever, Constipations is what it can start with. But what if you really want to have something like that?

In that case, in place of curd have Chach or Buttermilk, yes buttermilk is made from curd but its properties are very different.

Buttermilk with a pinch of black pepper and rock salt is the best replacement of curd at night.

Having Curd in Wrong Combinations

Utmost care should be taken when combining active culture foods like Curd as wrong combinations cause the accumulation of toxins in the body.

Two such common wrong combinations are Cucumber Raita and Boondi Raita. Damn, don’t we all love eating them?

Cucumber and curd are two opposite foods in terms of their properties and combining them in any way will damage your system from within whose ill effects can be seen in the form of fevers, and skin diseases.

Boondi, as it is deep fried in oil or ghee, isn’t compatible with curd either and also makes you put on fat.

Well not to disappoint you Cucumber Raita can easily be replaced by Bottle Gourd (Lauki) Raita. It tastes just as good and it’s a great food combo then curd and milk should never be consumed together.

Have you seen some foreign smoothie recipe where curd and milk is combined to bring out an ideal consistency, or sometimes in Indian homes butter is extracted from Curd with the addition of milk in it.

Both are wrong practices and should be discarded. Forget nourishment such foods will only fill your body with toxins.

These are some more foods which should never be consumed with Curd:

  1. Curd & Fish
  2. Curd & Brinjal
  3. Curd & Sour fruits
  4. Curd & Banana
  5. Curd & Eggs

Eating Curd in Skin problems

Do you get regular breakouts, one reason could be curd.

If your skin is prone to pimples, itching or any such problems you should be very cautious while consuming curd.

Ideally it should be avoided in such conditions, over 90% of the skin problems are result of Pitta Dosha [aggravation] that is increased heats in the body.

The chunks of curd and the curd which has gone sour is extremely hot in potency, does further worsen the condition.

So if you’re already fighting skin problems avoid curd for a while. If your skin is prone to such problems then eat only fresh curd which is naturally sweet and that too after properly blending it with a spoon as it changes its potency to relatively cool.

Similarly curd is never recommended to a person suffering from arthritis, but he or she too can consume fresh curd only after adding a pinch of dry ginger.

Heating the Curd

Yes nowadays adding curd while making curries and or marinating foods with hungs curd is quite common even in indian homes. This should strictly be avoided.

Adding curd in Tadka may bring out a tasty dish but in the end it’s damaging for the body.

Now we all know that curd is a food which has billions of active beneficial bacteria in it. When curd gets heated first of all they die.

Furthermore heating curd makes it even hotter in potency and difficult to digest. And most importantly a curd which is heated loses all its nutritional value and the chemical bonds are broken in such a way that it can cause allergies to the person consuming it.

For marination and curries other healthier alternatives may be used. Use butter instead.

Not Using Curd as Probiotic

Even though curd has billions of Lactobacillus ProBacteria, people depend on this so called probiotic foods and pills which are not more than a marketing gimmick. Example: Yakult etc.

Consuming such sugar loaded foods daily hardly helps people’s digestion, on the contrary it makes them put on weight.

It’s just because these companies don’t want you to know that if you only eat curd the right way, it could be the best source of probiotics for you.

So if you’re facing gut issues, just do this, on an empty stomach eat one cup of curd, a teaspoon of Mishri, Honey or Jaggery powder mixed in it.

The multiplication of probiotics due to adding of such healthy sweeteners is a way higher than any other.

2-3 times a week is good enough to keep your gut happy. You need not spend anymore on probiotics.

Eating Curd Everyday

Do you need curd all 12 months of the year? Curd is a food which should not be eaten daily.

It should be considered more like a seasonal food.

Ayurvedic texts clearly mention that the best time to eat curd is in the Winter season and the worst time to consume curd is in the rainy season.

Rainy season is that time of the year, when all the three doshas {Vata, Pitta & Kapha} are aggravated, the digestive fire is at its weakest and there is a lot of moisture in the year.

Curd doesn’t go well with the human system when there is a lot of moisture in the environment.

Eating curd in the rainy season may cause allergies due to the formation of toxins in the body.
